Pozniak: Biden must find right director for the CDC

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is looking for a new director. After only two years as the agency’s leader, Massachusetts resident Dr. Rochelle Walensky has called it quits. The CDC, part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, works to protect us from health and disease risks and is responsible for communicating serious public health issues to the nation with honest, timely and credible information. Sadly, the CDC and its leader did not measure up to its important mission during the COVID pandemic!.Unfortunately, President Biden’s selection of Walensky for this vital public health assignment resulted in a tumultuous experience for her and the agency from which they have yet to fully recover.Unlike Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, who had expertise in politics, public communications, public policy and executive leadership as mayor of Boston, Walensky had no such experience. This created serious credibility challenges for her and the CDC during th...Chicago White Sox score 6 runs in the 5th — all with 2 outs — in an 8-3 win against the Cleveland Guardians

The Chicago White Sox had two outs and nobody on in the fifth inning against the Cleveland Guardians.Luis Robert Jr. began a rally in the most unusual way, reaching on catcher’s interference. He took off for second on the next pitch and Yoán Moncada lined a single to right. The ball skipped away from Will Brennan, and Robert kept running to score the game’s first run.The Sox were just warming up.Gavin Sheets hit a three-run homer and Jake Burger added a two-run homer in the six-run inning as the Sox ran away with an 8-3 victory in front of 18,495 at Guaranteed Rate Field.“That’s the crazy part about this game, right?” Sox starter Lance Lynn said. “Something as weird as a catcher’s interference can spark an inning like that. But the guys just kept it rolling, kept the pressure on with two outs and the next thing you know, (Guardians starter Shane Bieber is) out of the game.”The Sox knocked the former Cy Young Award winner out of the...Lowry: Biden’s ‘modern’ strategy same old spending spree

Bidenomics is not just about spending money anymore. No, it’s about a new economic paradigm, according to a recent speech at the Brookings Institution by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. He describes the Biden approach as a “modern American industrial strategy.”The phrasing reflects the left’s fondness for putting the adjective “modern” in front of an old idea to make it sound shiny and new. “Modern monetary theory” is the phrase for the persistent notion — or temptation — that you can spend gobs of money you don’t have without consequence. “Modern” industrial policy is presumably superior to “antiquated” industrial policy, but both suffer from the same conceit that government — with all its inefficiencies and the inevitable inconsistencies and compromises that come with legislative sausage-making — can see the future better than market players. Now, it’s true that gover...Margaret Qualley dominates role in ‘Sanctuary’

Margaret Qualley has tended a rising career by listening to her inner voice.Take Friday’s two-character “Sanctuary” opposite Christopher Abbott (Marvel’s upcoming “Kraven the Hunter”). Qualley, 28, is Rebecca, a dominatrix with Abbott’s Hal her client. While undoubtedly a sexual situation, sex has very little to do with what happens. For Qualley, a Manson follower in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” a nun in “The Novitiate” and the mistress of a legendary Broadway Lothario in “Fosse/Verdon,” Rebecca was easy to embrace.“I’m not going to sound very articulate when I say this,” she began in a Zoom interview, “but essentially, I just have the feeling of ‘I really want to do this.’ Or I don’t.”Along with the role, “I’ve been wanting to work with Chris and this seemed like the perfect thing to do with him. But also, I always think inherently one thing is a reaction to whatever I have just done. That certainly influences how I’m feeling in that moment...Editorial: Biden hedges on G7 trip amid debt crisis

To whichever aide whispered in Joe Biden’s ear, “Mr. President, the debt ceiling is a big deal,” thank you.If he or she had not, Biden would be heading to Asia with the current fiscal crisis in his rear-view.As it is, the G7 summit in Japan is still on the agenda, but as The Hill reported, the White House on Tuesday left open the possibility that Biden could cut short the weeklong trip as debt talks remain at a standstill.National Security spokesman John Kirby confirmed that Biden will leave as planned on Wednesday, “We’re re-evaluating the rest of the trip now.”Now Congress knows how East Palestine, Ohio must have felt as Biden put anywhere-but-there on his itinerary after a fiery train crash rocked the town.“It’s difficult for me to tell you exactly what to anticipate at this point,” Kirby said. “Given where we are right now, it’s also incredibly prudent and responsible for the president to take a look at the rest of the trip.”We’re sorry, but you don’...Solomon: AI innovation brings host of legal challenges
Published Sat, 23 Nov 2024 23:11:16 GMT
In our increasingly digital world, artificial intelligence (AI) has made a huge impact. AI is both exciting and, to be honest, deeply troubling, at the same time. Anyone who doesn’t temper their hope for AI with some of the harsh realities on the horizon hasn’t been paying attention.AI has the potential to bring about incredible advancements in various fields, but it also poses some important legal challenges. One big issue we’re facing today is the need for regulations that strike a balance between innovation and ethics, making sure AI is used responsibly. As we look at the legal implications of AI and its potential problems, it’s clear that it needs, without delay, a strong legal framework.AI has been growing rapidly in recent years and has transformed industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation. But here’s the rub, as Shakespeare would have said: legal systems haven’t kept up with AI’s lightning-fast development. As a result, we already see gaps in...Mary Ann Esposito’s great focaccia hack

One of my usual Saturday chores is the weekly refrigerator clean out of leftovers and this time I found some broccoli and yellow squash. What to do?I had some Parmigiano Reggiano cheese rinds and a few cherry tomato stragglers plus some tomato sauce made earlier in the week. Sounded like the topping for a focaccia so I made the dough (store bought dough will work too) and topped it with the leftovers.A few sprinkles of oregano, some salt and pepper and a drizzle of olive oil finished it off. Every taste that was old was new again.Sweet Sunday Rolls perfect treat for weekend breakfast
