Healthful, delicious drinks aren’t limited to smoothies, although I appreciate that almost any fruit and many vegetables can be snuck into those blended beauties, and they still taste good. But powerhouse beverages reach beyond blender-whirled concoctions. The chefs at America’s Test Kitchen put their heads together and tried a variety of techniques to perfect recipes that are easy to prepare, creating libations that showcase fruits and vegetables. “The Complete Guide to Healthy Drinks” (America’s Test Kitchen, $27.99) is loaded with drinks that showcase a vast variety of flavors and textures. They contend that making them from scratch offers more control over ingredients choices and in the process reduces costs.Yes, some of these thirst-quenchers are smoothies, but others are juice combos, teas, kombuchas, infused waters and broths. Alexa Bartell, 20 (Provided by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department) The three men who authorities say threw rocks at vehicles last week, killing 20-year-old Alexa Bartell, turned around after the fatal crash and took a photo of the woman’s car as a memento, according to a Jefferson County sheriff’s affidavit. One of the 18-year-old suspects told investigators he felt “a hint of guilt,” and said that he and one other man had thrown objects at vehicles on at least 10 separate days since February. Another suspect was described by a friend as participating in “destructive behavior” because he liked to cause “chaos,” according to the 10-page affidavit released Thursday.Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak, all 18, appeared in Jefferson County District Court for the first time Thursday morning after they were arrested earlier this week for investigation of first-degree murder in Bartell’s death. In a world of inkjet and laser printers, there are still plenty of people who appreciate the craftsmanship of a bookmark or a postcard printed on a manually operated letterpress. Jim Gard, chair of the San Jose Printers Guild, says there’s a very good reason for that: Hand-printed materials feel more real and like vinyl records and film photography are making a comeback with a new generation.“They’re objects you can pick up. The type is something you can put in your hand,” said Gard, chair of the San Jose Printers’ Guild, a group that’s been championing letterpress printing since 1992. “Contrast that to a computer, where it’s a never-ending stream of 1s and 0s. It’s doesn’t have that reality. It doesn’t have that physical presence.”An exterior view of the print shop at History Park in San Jose, Calif., on April 27, 2023. The softball field was the only place that made sense to Margaret Malaika Weaver. No offspeed pitch moved as much as letters on a page, which would float and dance around the paper as the East Bay student struggled through classroom assignments.Trapped within the confines of the school curriculum, she was a completely different person than the one who patrolled centerfield for the St. Mary’s-Berkeley softball team.Supremely confident with a bat and glove, she withdrew from the rest of her world everywhere else. The Weaver family was as confused as Margaret was dejected.“I knew they were trying to figure out what was going on with me, but it felt like no one was believing in me at that point,” she said. “Maybe that’s who I am. I’m just the slow, stupid friend.”A long-overdue screening proved Margaret was neither slow nor stupid. She was diagnosed with dyslexia in August 2021, just weeks before her junior year, and the discovery changed her life. Her bright personality is no longer limite...Antioch man arrested Thursday for 5th time this year
