Colorado’s largest proposed battery plant gets last-minute charge despite opposition, winning OK Plans for Colorado’s largest battery plant in Brighton nearly ran out of juice in the face of strong opposition from neighbors who fear chemical contamination from the planned lithium-ion manufacturing facility. But in a 4-3 vote Tuesday night, the Brighton City Council passed an ordinance granting the proper zoning for the site on South Bromley Lane. The approval will allow Amprius Technologies Inc. to build out a 775,000-square-foot facility within a vacant industrial building to produce batteries for a world rapidly turning to non-fossil fuel energy sources. The vote followed several hours of testimony and fraught public input. A steady stream of neighbors told the council that the site, at 18875 East Bromley Lane, was too close to hundreds of homes and that the risk of exposure to chemical releases or fires at the plant was too great. Also in the audience Tuesday were a number of project supporters who touted the 300 or so jobs and the nearly $200 million investment the Calif...

CU Boulder rehomes 80-year-old beehives found in Old Main Two beehives believed to be at least 80 years old were rehomed after they were discovered in Old Main at the University of Colorado Boulder in August.Miles McGaughey, owner of Mountain Warrior Honey in Longmont, said the hives are “ancient.” McGaughey is a beekeeper and specializes in extracting large beehives from historic buildings, supporting the bees recovery and eventually rehoming them to a permanent location.“It’s an estimation, but after seeing lots of different combs after different ages, it was at least 80 or maybe older,” he said, later adding, “Anytime you deal with older structures, the chances are they’ve had bees in them for quite some time.”One of two hives that were found at Old Main at CU Boulder during an initial inspection of the building (Courtesy Photo / CU Boulder)McGaughey said he can tell how old a beehive is based on the colors of its layers. When bees make a honeycomb it starts out white, and as it gets older and more generations build on top of it, the co...

Scowl Serve Ballistic Beats at 1720 A lot of bands are redefining what “hardcore” music means in 2023, and the Santa Cruz, California quartet known as Scowl are one of the most expressive. Refreshingly all over the place, going from speedy guttural punk to witchy alternative rock, Kat Moss (vocals), Malachi Greene (guitar), Bailey Lupo (bass), Cole Gilbert (drums), and Mikey Bifolco (guitar) built a following with the aggressive grinds on their debut album, How Flowers Grow in late 2021, and a relentless touring schedule getting it out there. Road life and experiences inspired a lot on their latest EP Psychic Dance Routine, and saw the band evolve as their sound and live show got attention. With bright green hair and a vocal that easily goes from evil grunt to sultry wail, Moss is a marvel to watch on stage, as many of us first did at this year’s Coachella, both in the desert and on the fest’s You Tube Livestream. The band’s partnership with Taco Bell’s ‘Feed The Beat’ program (which provides touring bands ...

Flash mob summer: How can retail theft stampedes be stopped? When brazen groups of thieves in all-black clothes and hoodies sprinted into the Nordstrom at the Topanga Mall, the Yves Saint Laurent store at the Americana on Brand in Glendale and a pop-up Gucci store at South Coast Plaza, 911 calls from startled workers and shoppers came immediately. It wasn’t soon enough.Stealth planning, disguises, sheer ransacking speed – the thieves are in and out in two to four minutes – and getaways in multiple cars mean even a rapid law enforcement response can be too slow. With flash mobs of thieves committing dozens of heists in high-end and other stores around Southern California since early July, the problem became so dire that officials announced a task force focusing on cell tower dumps, surveillance video and other high-tech tools.Arrests are starting to happen. But halting the trend may take more time.“A lot of this stuff happens over social media and that’s how they coordinate with one another. A lot of these individuals don’t even know each other,...
